Roarke – 5 months

So I’ve tried not to overload you guys with pictures of my baby boy because I don’t want to annoy anyone. But I took some recently that are just too good not to share!

A couple weeks ago, I got a new toy: a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II camera lens. And to make a long story short: I’m OB-sessed with it! I just took Roarke out into our backyard, laid a blanket down and started snapping!!

He’s started teething, so he’s constantly running his tongue over his gums and sticking it out. Most people might think, “He’s got his tongue out..that’s not a good picture.” But, for me, that just captures ‘him.’

Excuse me while I melt into a puddle on the floor.

I was actually just testing my camera settings on this shot, but it ended up being one of my favorites!

Notice that bright blue blur in the background? That’s actually a kiddie pool in our neighbors yard (a.k.a not usually something you’d want in the background of a picture), but because of the large aperture on this lens, it just sort of fades away!

Baby boy in a chambray shirt? Plus that adorable grin? Be still my heart.

I’m so thankful that I’m able to capture these casual moments with my sweet little guy. Honestly, if you’re a soon-to-be parent, I would highly recommend getting a nice quality camera. Even outside of taking pictures for the blog, I use mine ALL the time…it’s one of the best purchases I’ve ever made!

Look What Happened…

So last weekend, this happened:

Look What Happened | Lemon Drop Life

We got hardwoods (engineered, btw) in our master bedroom! They’re the same floors we had put down in our nursery earlier this year. And momma is soooo very happy. The room looks so fresh and so clean clean!!

We also had them put down in our guest bedroom, which means….I can get going with the plan I shared with you guys a little while ago! Wahoo!

I also need to work out a serious plan for our master because they current state just ain’t cutting it, and our pretty floors deserve a pretty room!

DIY Watercolor Art

One of my favorite things is looking for ways to DIY art on the cheap. So when I came across watercolor colored pencils while browsing the art supplies aisle, I couldn’t resist trying them out! I adore the look of watercolor art and was excited to create my own!

Luckily, I already had a blank canvas on hand so this project only cost me a few bucks..score!!

I started out by lightly sketching out my drawing in pencil.

Look guys, an ar-teest I am not so I chose something I could draw pretty easily. Plus I knew I could have fun with colors on something like a butterfly.

After I finished my initial sketch, I started to add color.

Then I simply dipped a small paintbrush in some water and started brushing over the drawing.

It looks a bit messy close up, but the more you blend the better it becomes.

Once I was finished, I took a little Gold Rub n Buff and added it in the corners to give the canvas a little polish.

Ok, so it’s far from museum-worthy…but considering that in school I was always the kid that got the pat on the back and a “Nice try” look from the art teacher, I’m calling this one a success!

Inspiration Strikes

  • By
  • August 13, 2013

We’ve been in our house nearly two years, and in all that time I’ve barely touched our guest room. Basically, I hung some plain cream curtains and threw a quilt on the bed. Not exactly a room that says, “Welcome to our home, please stay as long as you’d like.” More like, “Oh, you’re here? I guess you can stay…if you have to…”

In other words, it needs some work.

I think the reason it’s taken me so long to do anything in there is because I just wasn’t finding the right inspiration. Occasionally, I would see a fabric or piece of artwork that I liked and think, “Hey, maybe this could be the jumping off point for the guest room!” But, a few days later I’d have forgotten all about it, which lets me know I really wasn’t that crazy about it to begin with.

But when I saw the cover of the July/August issue of House Beautiful, I knew I’d found my inspiration.hbx-july-august-2013-cover-mdnI have NEVER before been a fan of purple. It’s just not my thing. But I immediately became obsessed with this room and started daydreaming about where I could incorporate a little purple into our house. And I figured the guest room would be the perfect place! I mean purple is the color or  royalty…and I definitely want my guests to leave my house feeling like William & Kate. Complete with paparazzi stalkers outside our front door.

So keeping my inspiration room in the back of my mind, I put together a little mood board to help me gather my thoughts. Check it out!Inspiration Strikes | Lemon Drop LifeI’m looking at very pale lavender-gray walls, a color saturated rug, and pops of pink and red!

The first step is to rip out the carpet and install our engineered hardwood floors like we did in the nursery. Hope to be starting on that very soon!
