Best In Show

Well this post is coming a day later than usual, but better late than never! We spent yesterday down in Indy observing some of the Super Bowl madness. The whole city is abuzz with the impending game, it’s pretty exciting!! But onto a few things that excite me for a different reason 🙂

First up, a simple ceiling treatment that had me drooling. Pam of Simple Details used nailhead trim to jazz up her dining room and it looks completely AMAZING!

If you’ve recently inured your leg, you may be wondering what to do with your crutches once you’ve recovered. Well, Beckie from Infarrantly creative turned them into a lamp! Who’da thunk?

I’ve been itching to try out some Annie Sloan Chalk Paint..I’ve just seen so many beautiful makeovers done with it. For example, check out this dresser that Janet over at the Empty Nest redid. I love the colors and the attention she paid to detail..even down to the knobs!

Now I’m even more determined to get my hands on that paint!

Liebster Love

  • By
  • January 26, 2012

As I was going through my spam comments last night, I noticed one that didn’t look so spammy. It was from Virginia of LiveLoveDIY telling me that she had bestowed the Liebster award on me!

My first though was, “An award?!”..followed quickly by my second thought: “What in the world is a Liebster?!” But upon reading Virginia’s blog post about it, I discovered Liebster is German for “beloved, favorite, dearest” and it’s an award that’s given to bloggers with less than 200 followers to promote and encourage new friendships! What an honor..thank you Virginia! {Sidenote: you guys, go check out her master bedroom makeover..totally inspires me to get my butt in gear for ours!}

And now I get to spread the love!

Upon receiving the award, you’re supposed to pass it on to 5 other blogs that fit the criteria (bloggers that are fun a creative and have less than 200 followers). So here are my picks!

1. My good friend Whitney of Becoming…. Whitney is my inspiration for wanting to learn to sew, knit, and crochet. She has some awesome projects and is pretty funny to boot!

2. Tara at BehindTheRedBarnDoor. She’s done some really cute projects..I simply adore her jute webbing Christmas card holder!

3. The Vintique Object is one of my favorite sources of inspirations. She features a ton of beautiful interiors and always has great insight on how to best photograph a room.

4. Jenny from DIY Newlyweds is always doing fun crafty things..and I love her adorable pup!

5. Kahley from AmbianceBlog is so sweet! She runs her own interior design biz (so jealous!) and has great taste!

So that’s my 5! For you lovely gals that were chosen, the rules are simple: post the award on your blog with pride, link back to the blogger who selected you, and choose 5 more deserving blogs! And make sure to let them know you’ve chosen them!

Congrats ladies!

Mmm-Bop..Waffles

  • By
  • January 24, 2012

I think I’ve lamented this to you guys before, but I’m somewhat indecisive. I can go back and forth on a decision 37 times before I finally just have to light a fire under my bum and DO something. I’m a waffler. Except that waffles are delicious, and my indecisiveness is more annoying than delicious. Hungry?

So while I’m wallowing in my lack of decision-making skills, I thought I’d ask for your opinions on a couple of matters.

First up, the buffet in the entryway. It was an awesome find and I love it to pieces. And the hardware rocks me like a hurricane.

I love it like a love song, baby. (I’m kind of in a lyrical mood today..can you tell?) So my dilemma is this: paint or don’t paint? The piece is in really good condition (no major dents or scratches) and even though I’m usually not a honey oak kind of person, it just seems to fit the mid-century vibe of this piece.

However, when I see something like this:

via Isabella & Max Rooms

I find myself heading for the paint can. What do you think? And in the spirit of full disclosure, I should tell you that I plan to eventually stencil the wall that it sits on (not with any crazy color, just a lighter shade of gray) and paint the trim work white. So it would actually end up looking a lot like the vignette that’s going on in the picture above, except my floors are tile and not wood. So maybe a little natural wood would help ground things? I just don’t know.

My second dilemma: our master bedroom.

Please ignore my husbands bright orange house slippers. And the chunk out of the wardrobe door. We got those at Ikea right after Christmas, and the door flew out of the back of the truck on the way home and so it’s seen better days (it’s been the star of many plays…1000 bonus points to anyone that can name all my weird song lyric references in this post). {Sidenote: does anyone have any suggestions on repairing it?}

Our bedroom suite was one of the first things we purchased when we got married. I’ve told you guys before that I regret getting a matchy-matchy set, but it’s what we have for now so I want to work with it. As you can see, we’ve got a color scheme going already (gray, white, mint green..the main color of our comforter is a minty green, it’s kind of hard to tell in the pictures) but the room just doesn’t feel cozy to me. It’s lacking personality, I think. So, I feel like we need to definitely add some more artwork and maybe another pop of color. And I’m at a loss for what to do on the wall that currently only has a canvas of one of our wedding pictures. Maybe move the bench underneath it and put something else at the foot of the bed? I’ve also thought about giving the dresser some kind of dramatic treatment just so there’s a wow factor in the room. What are your suggestions for this room? I need some inspiration!

A Little Getaway

Sorry for being MIA this week guys, but I’ve been in Louisiana for a conference! Sneaky, huh?

We’re currently on our way back home now (with the temperature rapidly dropping..boo) and we should be home late tonight. I’m hoping to do a little work on the craft room tomorrow and have an update for you guys on Monday!

For now, I’ll leave you with this:

The Fruits Of My Labor

  • By
  • January 16, 2012

A few weeks ago, I was just doing some casually looking at some of my favorite online shopping sites and it ended up turning into a mini shopping spree.  Does that ever happen to you?

I was browsing Urban Outfitters, which I like to think of as a more affordable version of Anthropologie (one of my favorites!). They have a lot of quirky, unique accessories that I totally love. I ended up buying a rug, two art prints, and a light fixture..all for the craft room. It’s kind of dangerous now that I have this entire room that I can decorate just for me. I’m totally loading up on ultra feminine stuff, and I don’t feel guilty one little bit!!

So ya wanna see the loot?

I knew I wanted a circle rug..I just like the look of them and I think it will work well once the room is all put together. When I spotted this one, I knew it would be perfect. AND it was on sale for $25! It’s 5 feet across, so it’s not exactly small..just the perfect size for this room 🙂 Originally I was thinking I would go with something more subdued, but now that I have this, I’m totally digging all the bright fun colors!

Ohmygosh, you guys, I can’t even tell you how much I love this little pendant light. I can’t wait to get it hung and see it all lit up! And the price tag? $30. I also had to buy a cord kit to go with it, which cost another $20.

I just loved these sweet little art prints and for only $10 each I couldn’t pass them up. The fair isle moose just makes me smile and the color palette is totally perfect for the room, and the beaded elephant is super pretty and delicate looking. And I love me a gilded frame.

So the grand total for this little shopping extravaganza was about $95, but I googled around and found a 20% off coupon and brought it down to just over $80 including tax, and shipping was free! And the thing I loved the most about buying this stuff? It was all purchased with money that I’ve made from this little ol’ blog. For some reason that just made me extra giddy…being able to actually see the fruits of my labor here. And they are delicious 🙂

We got snow! For the past two days, it’s been snowing on and off and we have lots of the fluffy white stuff on the ground today. I have a love-hate relationship with snow. I love being able to stay in under a cozy blanket and look at it out the window..but if I have to go out in it, then I hate it. Anyone with me on that?

So here’s to hoping you’re curled up under a blanket so you can enjoy this weeks Best In Show!

Jill from homemade by jill has a great little tutorial on how to make free printables using Picnik. Sarah at Thrifty Decor Chick recently used it, and I used it this week to make my Love Potion No. 9 printable for my V-Day mantel.

So we all know that Mandi from Vintage Revivals is the queen of dramatic room reveals, and her master bedroom is no disappointment! Can you even believe it’s the same room?!

And speaking of awesome makeovers, Greg and Ashley from 7th House on the Left recently revealed their completed bathroom, and it looks awesome! It has a great spa-like quality!

Ahhh, I love a good makeover! Now time to make some hot chocolate and get cozy again. Happy Saturday!

The Love Nest

  • By
  • January 11, 2012

I finally got all of our Christmas taken down (why does it take sooo long?!?) which left our mantel nook looking pretty bare. I debated doing some wintery decorations, but my goodness, it’s been so unseasonably warm here that I just couldn’t bring myself to decorate with snowmen and icicles. So I jumped straight to Valentine’s Day..even though it’s technically a winter holiday, it still gives me the first hope of spring!

I was taking inventory of what items I already have laying around and trying to come up with a concept. I don’t have a lot of choices for large scale pieces that take up visual space in our mantel nook, so I knew I wanted to use my antique window with the bird drawing on it. And from there sprang the idea of using a ‘Love Birds/Love Nest’ theme. I already had several items that fit the bird decor and I browsed Hobby Lobby and Jo-Ann’s to come up with the rest. Jo-Ann’s actually already had their V-day decor at 40% off (!) which was a nice surprise. I figured with it being over a month away, it would surely be full price. Hooray for early markdowns!!

So here’s my little Love Nest aka my Valentine’s Day Mantel:

Like I said before, the large ‘anchor’ piece, if you will, is the antique window. Then I layered a small canvas in front of it that I made with some circles of sparkly scrapbook paper. I don’t care how many times/ways I see a chevron pattern, I always love it! Then I layered a smaller little framed bird (from Jo-Ann’s) in front of that one. I love how the sparkle of the scrapbook paper ties into the red sparkle on the frame. And I didn’t even plan it. Boom! I also strung a little sequin garland across the window. I got it in the Christmas section for about $0.15 (90% off). Always remember to look through discounted seasonal decor for things that can serve multiple holidays!

I used an antique scale that my MIL got me for Christmas to give some height to one of my little birds nests. The birds nest is really just two small grapevine wreaths tied together with some spanish moss filling out the middle. Then I perched one of my beloved brass birdies inside.

I placed a couple topiary balls that I got for 30% off at Hobby Lobby in front of the scale along with a little birdie made of stone. And check out the leaves on the topiary balls..they look like tiny hearts! Love little details like that!

On the other side, I perched several bottles on top of a cake stand I already had. And I made a fun little ‘love potion no. 9’ printable to attach to one of them 🙂 I put my other brass bird/birds nest combo and a topiary ball on this side, as well, just to try and balance everything out. Then I sprinkled some sparkly scrapbook paper confetti around and called it a day!

Oh! But of course I can’t forget my little garland! I printed out the words Love Nest on some cardstock, cut it out with some decorative scissors, and then glued each letter to a foam heart and strung it with some twine! I punched two holes in the top of my foam so they wouldn’t twirl around and face every which way.

So who else is busting out the V-Day decor?? I don’t know why, but I’m getting extra giddy over it this year!

Linking up at Home Stories from A to Z , Nest of Posies, and Decorchick.

We’re baaaack! I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss doing these posts the last couple of weeks. I love scouting the ‘net for inspiration, and I love sharing it with you guys even more!! So let’s see what I’ve been digging on recently, shall we?

How about we start off with a beautiful renovation? Marian from Miss Mustard Seed recently revealed her office makeover and, wow! It looks clean, bright, and amazing!!

This closet makeover from Sandra at Sawdust and Paper Scraps made my jaw hit the keyboard. And the most impressive thing? Girlfriend did most of the work all by herself! Watch the video that she includes in the post and I swear you’ll also be amazed by her superpowers. And the little happy dance they do at the end cracks me up!

And last, but not least, I love these little doily bowls that Kara from Kara Pasley Designs made. They’re so delicate and feminine. I think I might need to make a few for the craft room (which is shaping up to be a total explosion of all things feminine)!

Really, Spammers?

  • By
  • January 6, 2012

If you’re a blogger, I’m sure you’ve received your fair share of spam comments. Now, mostly I just find them extremely annoying. But every once in a while, one catches my eye and either makes me chuckle or totally scratch my head.

So, on this wonderful Friday afternoon, I thought  I’d share a few of my favorites with you.

Wow, that’s deep, Virgil.

How did you know that Courntey Cox and I are close, personal friends?!? I’ll be sure to pass along the message.

Hey everyone! This doughnut aficionado is going to put MY blog in the running for the greatest blog on the  Internet! Does this mean I get free doughnuts for life?

You’re welcome ?

FINALLY! Someone who appreciates my good standard data. Took long enough. Geesh.

If I’ve got to deal with spammers, I’m glad they’re at least partially entertaining.

Oh, and if you’re looking for some more entertainment along these lines, check out my friend Whitney’s posts about her Google search hits here and here. Hi-larious.

Update: Because I mentioned Russia in yesterday’s post, I’ve gotten about 15 spam comments in Russian. Darn you, perceptive spammers.

{Sidenote: Probably 80% of my spam comments are always on the same post and they’ve always got something to do with stinkin’ Uggs. Is there some kind of a better spam filter I should be using??}

Will Hola Work?

  • By
  • January 5, 2012

So I know I already posted my goals for this year, but one that I failed to put on the list was that JP and I wanted to travel somewhere internationally this year. Travel is a passion for both of us and we kicked around India (he’s already been) and Italy (I’ve already been), but we wanted to go somewhere that neither of us has ever been.

Over Christmas, we got the chance to see my aunt and uncle who have been doing missions work in Latvia an Estonia for the past year or so. That’s when it hit us..Eastern Europe! They were thrilled with the idea of us coming to visit them, and it will give us a chance to see a part of the world neither of us has ever seen! Cha-ching!!

We booked our flight yesterday (and actually got them for about $300 cheaper than we orginally thought we could..say whaat?!) and our plan is to have my aunt and uncle show us around Latvia and visit Russia, Poland, and Prague.

We’re in pretty hardcore planning mode right now, seeing as we’ll be making the trip in early March (brrr!!). So if any of you have been to any of those places and have suggestions or tips, please let me know! Even if you’ve never been, but have an idea of some cool things to see..feel free to pass along the info!

Oh, and I Googled ‘Russian greeting’ because I was going to be all cute and use it as the title of this post..but, my word, that language looks difficult! Here’s to hoping that I can skate by on the cute little faux fur hat I plan to wear!

Anybody have a horse I can borrow?
